Adopt a Tern

You are here: Home / Programs / Common Tern Project / Adopt a Tern
When you participate in our NEW Adopt a Tern initiative, you generously support our Common Tern restoration efforts. Every donation helps monitor colonies, educate the public, and rebuild a balanced ecosystem.

Adopt a Tern

HABITAT – Coastal and inland waters in open, low-lying areas where shallow waters for fishing are close. Winters are spent along coastlines in warm subtropical or tropical waters.

DIET – Mostly fish but will eat shrimp, other crustaceans, insects, marine worms, small squid, and leeches.

THREATS – Human disturbance, high predation rates, and flooding and habitat loss.

FACTS:

  •  Common Terns almost went extinct in the late 1800s due to plumage hunters.
  • Terns, like many seabirds, have nasal glands that excrete excess salt. This allows them to drink saltwater and freshwater.
