Out on the Ice Virtual Field Trip
A Distance Learning Guide for Educators and Guardians
Save The River is committed to providing quality educational programs and resources for formal and informal educators throughout our region. Save The River has developed Virtual Learning Guides and Resources for students, parents, and educators who are interested in learning more about the St. Lawrence River.
Close your eyes. Imagine you are at the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, getting into your snowshoes for a cold adventure on the trails. Along our hike, you notice that the once busy summertime habitat is now still. You can see sheet ice forming on the river along the snowy riverbanks. You look down the shore and notice a muskrat in its lodge made out of cattails. You look up and hear the calls of waterfowl flying away for migration. What was that noise coming from the river? It must be a fisherman using an auger!
By attending this virtual field trip to South Bay on Wellesley Island, your students will become engaged in learning about the St. Lawrence River, hibernation and migration, and the changing habitats above and below the ice. Your students will discover the importance of island habitats and the relationship between plants and animals during the winter. Your students will also learn how Save The River and the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center work together to protect the river and educate students.
The On the Ice Virtual Field Trip can be integrated into classroom curriculum and addresses New York State Science and(or) ELA Learning Standards with a focus on K-3 grade levels. Save The River can work with you to tailor pre-and post discussion content to meet your classroom needs.
