COVID-19 Sewage Testing

You are here: Home / What We Do / Advocacy / COVID-19 Sewage Testing
Save The River Upper St. Lawrence RiverkeeperⓇ applauds the decision by the Jefferson County legislators to begin testing for COVID-19 in the Watertown sewer system wastewater. Protocols similar to the one being used in Watertown are being used in Holland, France, and many parts of the United States to allow municipalities to find traces of Covid. Small concentrations of Covid in wastewater are indicators that are seen days before people begin to manifest symptoms. This allows municipalities to identify and prepare for an outbreak.

Save The River has been advocating at the local, state, and federal level for this testing protocol. Jefferson County legislators are to be commended for taking this action to protect the citizens of Watertown. We hope similar testing will be instituted at other River communities very soon.
